WHO deems Africa ill-prepared for 3rd wave

Vaccine update:

  • Globally, over 2.12 billion doses have been administered across 176 countries at a rate of 38.9 million doses a day.
  • The US has promised to donate 750,000 vaccines to Taiwan 
  • China has authorized the emergency use of the Sinovac vaccine for children has young as three. 
  • The WHO has warned that Africa is not ready for a third wave as African countries struggle to acquire vaccines.
  • African countries have administered vaccines to just 31 million people out of a population of 1.3 billion; only 7 million of those have received both doses.
  • In SA, 1.343 million vaccines have been administered to date.
  • SA may be buying 5 million Sputnik vaccines from Russia. 

 Global cases update:

  • Covid-19 global update: cases have surpassed 174.05 million, while the death toll has surpassed 3.74 million; recoveries are at 157.06 million.
  • The US has 34.21 million cases, accounting for 20% of global cases; the US death toll is 612,366. 
  • India has 28.90 million cases and 349,229 deaths; Brazil has 16.94 million cases and 473,495 deaths.
  • While new infections continue to decline globally, rising cases, from Fiji to the UK, serve as reminder that the pandemic is still here.
  • India is starting a phased-in easing of restrictions as it has reported the lowest number of cases since early April.
  • UK health officials have said that it is too early to say whether a planned loosening of rules on 21 June will go ahead.

 Africa cases update:

  • Africa’s Covid-19 cases are at 4.964 million; fatalities are at 132,663.
  • Morocco has 521,426 reported cases, Nigeria 166,767, Ghana 94,228, Kenya 172,491.
  • The continent has seen a 20% increase in cases in the past two weeks. 
  • Eight countries have recorded a rise of more than 30% in the past week.

 South Africa cases update:

  • SA has the 19th highest caseload, at 1.696 million; 5,074 new cases were reported yesterday.
  • Covid-19 deaths rose by 45 yesterday, to 56,974; 1.578 million people (or 93%) have recovered from the virus.
  • Provincial caseload: Gauteng 474,484 (accounting for 28% of the total); KwaZulu-Natal has 341,023 (20,1% of the total); Western Cape 296,402 (17,5% of the total).
  • Provincial deaths: Western Cape 11,863; Gauteng 11,411; KwaZulu-Natal 10,534.
  • 11.876 million tests have been conducted since 5 March 2020; 35,821 tests were conducted yesterday.
