The COVID-19 daily tracker is an easy guide to daily developments of this pandemic, globally and for Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa specifically. The PDF (see link in email body, top right) contains a series of informative graphs. 

  • The global total of COVID-19 cases is 5,197,776 and 334,675 deaths have been confirmed. Recoveries from the virus have increased to 2,082,717. The number of cases in the US has increased to 1,620,902, accounting for 31% of global cases; the death toll is 96,354. Russia has 317,554 confirmed cases and 3,099 deaths and Brazil has 310,921 cases and 20,082 deaths.
  • Confirmed cases in Africa now stand at 99,354. Fatalities on the continent are currently at 3,091. African countries have wide-ranging, and varied, prevention and containment measures. The UK has pledged GBP20 million to support the African Union in fighting the pandemic on the continent. The World Health Organisation has indicated that it is working to provide tools to promote hygiene in vulnerable rural and urban households across Africa.
  • SA has 19,137 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 369 deaths. This is an increase of 1,134 new cases; 8,950 people have recovered from the virus. The Western Cape has the highest number of confirmed cases at 12,153 (accounting for 63% of the total); 235 deaths have been reported. Gauteng has 2,453 cases (accounting for 13% of the total) and 27 deaths. The Eastern Cape has 2,324 cases and 50 deaths and KwaZulu-Natal has 1,693 cases and 46 deaths. 525,433 tests were conducted since 5 March; 18,572 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours; 61% of these were in the private sector while 39% were conducted in the public sector.
