Global update:

  • Global cases have surpassed 20.25 million while the death toll has surpassed 738,000; recoveries are at 13.12 million.
  • The number of cases in the US has increased to 5.25 million, accounting for 26% of global cases; the death toll is 166,192.
  • The rate of new infections slowed, and hospitalizations declined in several hard-hit US states. 
  • Brazil has 3.06 million cases and 101,857 deaths.
  • India’s cases are at 2.27 million and 45,361 deaths have been reported; Russia has 892,654 confirmed cases and 15,001 deaths.
  • Greece has announced that visitors will be required to take tests upon entry; Finland will quarantine travellers from most of the world. 
  • Australia is battling a resurgence of cases.
  • Second waves of the coronavirus pandemic are beginning to emerge. 
  • The World Health Organisation concluded its mission to China to examine the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak last week. It is now preparing for a larger group of experts to visit the suspected outbreak zone. The WHO noted that “epidemiological studies will begin in Wuhan to identify the potential source of infection of the early cases”. US President Trump claimed in April to have seen evidence to support the theory that a Chinese lab was the origin of the virus.

Africa update:

  • Confirmed cases in Africa are at 1.05 million; fatalities on the continent are currently at 23,603.
  • South Africa, with 563,598 cases, is the only southern African country to feature in the top 10.
  • Egypt has 95,666 reported cases, and Nigeria has 46,867 reported cases; Ghana has 41,212.
  • Kenya has 26,928 confirmed cases of the virus.
  • The World Health Organisation Africa director noted last week that the “continent is at a pivotal point” and that the virus “has spilled out of major cities and spread into distant hinterland”.
  • Concerns are rising in many countries regarding whether the already overburdened and under-resourced health services will be able to cope.
  • Healthcare workers are calling for more help for pregnant women, as concerns about maternal mortality rates increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic are rising.
  • The African Union (AU) noted that “aggressive and bold action” is needed from countries on the continent. The AU also noted that Tanzania's lack of data is a "concern".

South Africa update:

  • SA reached 100,000 cases on 22 June (110 days), it took a further 14 days to reach 200,000, 9 days to reach 300,000, a further 8 days to reach 400,000 and 9 days more to breach 500,000. 
  • SA currently has the 5th highest number of COVID-19 cases globally at 563,598 confirmed COVID-19 cases; this is an increase of 46,736 new cases.
  • COVID-19 deaths rose by 2,082 in a week to 10,621.
  • 417,200 people have recovered from the virus, which translates into a recovery rate of 74%.
  • Gauteng has the highest number of confirmed cases at 193,561 (accounting for 34% of the total) cases; 2,618 deaths have been reported. The Western Cape has 100,213 (accounting for 18% of the total) and 3,429 deaths while the KwaZulu Natal has 99,386 cases and 1,420 deaths. The Eastern Cape has 82,578 cases and 2,266 deaths.
  • 3.26 million tests were conducted since 5 March; 16,911 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours.
  • According to hospital surveillance data from select hospitals, there are currently 9,416 hospitalisations (from 10,544 a week ago), 1,441 patients in ICU (from 1,520 a week ago), and 739 people are on ventilators (from 815 a week ago).
