SA behind the vaccination curve, with 2.141 million doses administered to date

Vaccine update:

  • Globally, over 2.62 billion doses have been administered across 180 countries at a rate of 39.7 million doses a day.
  • Around 50% of people in Germany have received at least one vaccination dose.
  • Germany's CureVac vaccine has been found to be only 47% effective. 
  • More than 80% of the adult population in Beijing have been fully vaccinated.
  • AstraZeneca’s vaccine manufacturing partner in Thailand has missed the delivery target in the country; shipments of the vaccines to other Southeast Asian countries have also been delayed.
  • In Australia, the AstraZeneca vaccine will now only be given to people over the age of 60 due to blood clot concerns, which will likely further slow the nation’s vaccination rollout. The Pfizer vaccine will be the preferred option for those under 60.
  • Denmark is expected to start vaccinating children as young as 12.
  • Japan is looking to accelerate its vaccine rollout by allowing private employers and universities to administer vaccines on-site.
  • Locally, 2.141 million vaccines have been administered to date.

Global cases update:

  • Cases have surpassed 179.25 million, while the death toll has surpassed 3.88 million; recoveries are at 163.82 million.
  • The US has 34.40 million cases, accounting for 19% of global cases; the US death toll is 617,166. 
  • India has 29.93 million cases and 388,164 deaths; Brazil has 17.92 million cases and 501,918 deaths.
  • Russia, Germany and Portugal have reported more cases of the Delta variant. 
  • Bangkok has relaxed some restrictions on restaurants, convenience stores and sports venues as new cases are under control and vaccination rates are rising.
  • Canada’s border with the US is unlikely to reopen until 75% of Canada’s population has been vaccinated. 
  • Dubai airport hopes to be at 90% capacity by autumn.
  • A US adviser has said that China risks international isolation if it fails to allow a "real" probe into the virus's origins.

Africa cases update:

  • Africa’s Covid-19 cases are at 5.24 million; fatalities are at 137,856.
  • Morocco has 526,651 reported cases, Nigeria 167,206, Ghana 94,913, Kenya 179,075.
  • The continent has seen a 44% increase in the cases and a 20% rise in deaths over the past week.
  • The WHO has warned that the numbers do not reflect the true size of the outbreak.
  • International health authorities have also noted that Africa is facing a severe shortage of oxygen that is leading to preventable deaths from Covid-19.
  • Governments across Africa are scrambling to reinforce health systems and accelerate vaccine drives as a third wave threatens to overwhelm hospitals.

South Africa cases update:

  • SA currently has the 19th highest caseload, at 1.823 million; 13,155 new cases were reported yesterday.
  • Covid-19 deaths rose by 112 yesterday, to 58,702; 1.647 million people (or 90.4%) have recovered from the virus.
  • Provincial caseload: Gauteng 553,908 (accounting for 30,4% of the total); KwaZulu-Natal has 346,813 (19% of the total); Western Cape 308,376 (16,9% of the total).
  • Provincial deaths: Western Cape 12,054; Gauteng 12,114; KwaZulu-Natal 10,615.
  • 12.549 million tests have been conducted since 5 March 2020.
  • The country moved to lockdown Level 3 last week as new infections surge.
  • The night-time curfew has been extended from 10 pm to 4 am and restrictions on alcohol sales were tightened.
