SA has the 16th highest number of infections globally

Global update:
- Global cases have surpassed 58.98 million, while the death toll has surpassed 1.39 million; recoveries are at 40.76 million.
- The US now has 12.58 million cases, accounting for 20% of global cases; the death toll is 262,696. The US is planning to start vaccinations in less than three weeks.
- India has 9.14 million cases and 133,773 deaths; Brazil 6.07 million cases and 169,197 deaths; Russia 2.08 million cases and 36,179 deaths.
- The UK is expected to reintroduce tiered curbs in place of a nationwide lockdown.
- The French government plans a three-phase easing of measures from December; Italy is also considering a pre-holiday easing of restrictions.
- Regeneron's antibody cocktail received an emergency-use authorization from US regulators.
- Pfizer's vaccine could get the go-ahead in the UK in less than a week; AstraZeneca's final stage vaccine findings are expected to be released soon.
Africa update:
- Africa’s COVID-19 cases remain relatively low, with confirmed cases at 2.08 million; fatalities are at 49,802.
- Morocco has 324,941 reported cases, Nigeria 66,383, Ghana 50,874, Kenya 77,372.
- The African Development Bank has approved a grant of $27.33m to the Africa CDC to provide technical assistance and build capacity and support the African Union COVID-19 Response Fund.
- The Oxford COVID-19 vaccine trials in Kenya have entered stage three; the safety and efficacy results are expected at the end of this month.
- The World Health Organisation has launched a new ‘Mask Up’ campaign. The campaign will seek to educate more than 40 million young people on the continent about COVID-19 safety measures, including wearing masks and challenging vaccine misinformation.
South Africa update:
- SA currently has the 16th highest caseload, with 767,679, an increase of 2,270 new cases.
- COVID-19 deaths rose by 58 yesterday, to 20,903; 710,099 people have recovered from the virus, a recovery rate of 92.5%.
- Gauteng has the highest number of confirmed cases, at 233,036 (accounting for 30.4% of the total); 4,968 deaths have been reported.
- The Western Cape has 125,449 (accounting for 16.3% of the total) and 4,523 deaths, while KwaZulu-Natal has 126,034 (accounting for 16.4% of the total) and 3,309 deaths.
- The Eastern Cape has 117,374 cases (accounting for 15.3% of the total) and 4,353 deaths.
- 5.29 million tests have been conducted since 5 March; 21,904 were conducted in the past 24 hours.
