SA vaccination drive in focus

Vaccine update:

  • Globally, over 6.5 billion vaccines have been administered across 184 countries at a rate of 25.5 million doses a day.
  • The African Union has signalled a demand for more COVID-19 vaccine doses from India.
  • Locally, 19,041 million vaccines have been administered to date in SA; 21,867 vaccines were administered yesterday.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa continues to stress vaccinating the adult population, and urged companies to facilitate the process for their staff.
  • He also announced a countrywide drive to increase vaccinations over weekends to cater for those unable to do so during working hours.
  • The government’s target is to have vaccinated 70% of the SA adult population by year-end.

Global cases update:

  • Cases have surpassed 238,652 million, while the death toll has surpassed 4.86 million; recoveries are at 215.85 million.
  • The US has 45.20 million cases, accounting for 18% of global cases; the US death toll is 733,575. 
  • India has 33.97 million cases and 450,814 deaths; Brazil has 21.57 million cases and 601,047 deaths.
  • Sydney has reopened after a 15-week lockdown; restaurants, pubs, gyms and retailers are allowed to open to fully vaccinated patrons.
  • New Zealand has extended Auckland’s lockdown; vaccinations will be mandatory for most healthcare and education workers.
  • US infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci has commented that cases in the US remain too high for the country to return to normal. 
  • The UK’s health department has noted a likely bigger risk of deaths from flu this winter

Africa cases update:

  • Africa’s Covid-19 cases are at 8.46 million; fatalities are at 214,457.
  • Morocco has 939,187 reported cases, Nigeria 207,694, Ghana 128,368, Kenya 251,152.

South Africa cases update:

  • SA currently has the 17th highest caseload, at 2.912 million; 648 new cases were reported yesterday.
  • Active cases are at 32,572; KwaZulu-Natal leads the way, with 15,311 active cases, followed by the Northern Cape with 4,494.
  • Covid-19 deaths rose by 25 yesterday, to 88,317; 2.79 million people (or 95.8%) have recovered from the virus.
  • 17.982 million tests have been conducted since 5 March 2020; 22,098 tests were conducted yesterday.
  • The positivity rate is 2,9%.
  • SA, together with several other countries, has been removed from Britain’s red list.
